What it is

The show

LUZ, MÚSICA Y COLOR is a live, on-air gathering. Music and sound merge into a unique experience where every note gets an immediate visual response.

Most live events show graphics behind the stage on a giant screen, but none of them relate to the audio playing at that moment. That is why I decided to take a step with this project.

How it works

The system

The music runs through REAPER, the visualizer listens to the audio and translates it into shapes, color and motion on the spot. It splits what is playing into six bands and recognizes the twelve notes, so it can tell a kick drum hit from a sustained chord and responds differently in each case.

It reacts on two timescales: fast when the sound comes in, slow when it fades. That is why the visuals accompany the music instead of just vibrating.

The chat is part of the show. While I play, you decide what it looks like.

Three ways to step in: scenes (what you see), CLIMAX (how it feels) and modifiers (how much, how fast, which way). You type them in the live chat.

Modifiers accept a direction: ,velocidad mas, ,viento menos. The comma is the comfortable way on mobile; !nebula works the same. ,reset returns the active scene to its starting point.

What the event is like

Format

It is a relaxed gathering, with the music front and center and the visuals responding.

It is not a filmed concert or a video backdrop: it is a show that listens. When a song opens up, you see it; when something does not come out right, you hear that too. It happens live, once only.

Stage performances are a different thing. When the system is taken to a venue, with a projector and an audience in front, it is a stage show, not the monthly edition. They are two formats of the same project.

Guest artists

Guests

Every edition has room for one more person: they can play and sing. When there is a guest, their name appears on the cover of that date and stays in the archive.
